Giants
lose to the Cowboys 35-17.
"The
Giants got off to a good start, but that ended fast. Things looked good at the
onset with the Giants stopping the Cowboys on their opening drive, and then scoring
a touchdown on theirs. The good feeling didn't last long as the Cowboys came right
back and tied the score. Then in the second quarter, they added two more touchdowns.
The Giants were down 21-7 at the half. The Giants got the ball first to start
off the third quarter and added a field goal. The Cowboys scored two more touchdowns,
and were up 35-10 at the end of the quarter. With less than three minutes left
in the game, the Giants got on board one more time, scoring a touchdown when Wayne
Gallman ran the ball in from two yards out. When they got the ball back, head
coach Pat Shurmur made the best decision of the game by sending in rookie Daniel
Jones to run the offense. Considering the score and amount of time left, nothing
was expected, and nothing much happened. Jones completed three short passes, missed
on a deep ball, and then fumbled the ball away after a five yard run. Cowboys
Dak Prescott took two knees to end the game, and the Giants ended up with a 35-17
loss. Now Shurmur won't be asked for the next 15 games 'when we'll get to see
Jones on the field'. He will have to field questions about the team failing to
get points up on the board, and about how poorly the defense played."
"Fans
got to see Daniel Jones on the field, but not for the right reasons. The Giants
didn't toss him in to close out a game where they held a big lead. It was the
other way around, as they took a 35-17 loss to the Cowboys on opening day. The
offensive line looked good today, and Saquon Barkley ran for 120 yards on 11 carries,
5 in the first half, and 6 in the second. That wasn't enough. They needed
more of a running game to wear down the Cowboys, and Wayne Gallman was handed
the ball only twice, once for a 15 yard run, and again for a two yard touchdown.
Manning, even lacking Golden Tate for this game, made good use of his receivers,
especially Evan Engram, who was targeted 14 times for 11 receptions, and their
only other touchdown. Barkley and Gallman did their parts with seven catches between
them, but the Giants would have been better served using them to pound away at
the Cowboys defense. The major problem in this game though was the Giants defense.
As we said in the preview, with the amount of change they've had, the uncertainties
are everywhere. It didn't help that they were up against one of the best offensive
lines in the NFL, but you were hoping they wouldn't look as bad as they did. There
was no pass pressure, and the secondary looked lost. Anyway,
as it usually goes, as NFL Sunday opening day nears a close, about half the teams
are eliminated from having a perfect season. The Giants are in that group, and
the thing to avoid is joining the next group, teams that haven't won a game by
the end of week two. The Buffalo Bills are up next for the Giants, making their
second road trip in a row to MetLife Stadium. Down 16 points in the second half,
they came back to beat the Jets 17-16. Let's see if the Giants defense can get
their act together for this one."
