Giants
lose to Tampa Bay 25-23 "Another
letdown by the Giants. The Giants were playing well and leading at halftime, but
the way this season has been going, I knew it couldn't last. I liked that the
Giants were wearing their throwback all-white
uniforms. It was a reminder of better days. They played well at the start, leading
7-3 after the first quarter, and then 14-6 at the half. No one was expecting
to see the Giants get anywhere against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers led by Tom Brady.
They were coming off their two biggest wins of the season against some tough competition
where they beat the Packers 38-10, and the Raiders 45-20. Somehow the Giants had
held them to just two field goals at the half. The second half started off
with a great kickoff return by Dion Lewis that gave Daniel Jones the ball at the
Giants 44-yard line. Wayne Gallman
ran for 2 yards, and then Jones threw a pass to Sterling Shepard that was intercepted.
I thought for sure that Brady would make the Giants pay for that mistake by driving
his team to a touchdown, but I was wrong. The Giants defense held Tampa Bay to
a field goal. Then I was wondering if someone had drugged Jones during the
halftime break. He went 3-and-out on the next drive, missing Sterling Shepard
down the field. This time Brady finished his next drive off with a touchdown pass
to Ron Gronkowski. Tampa Bay was leading for the first time in the game, 15-14
after their two point conversion failed. The Giants took the lead back with
a field goal, and the defense held Tampa Bay to a 3-and-out after Carter Coughlin
sacked Brady. Things were looking good again, and Jones was down at the Tampa
Bay 34-yard line when under pressure, he threw another interception. Tampa
Bay scored a touchdown, and after the Giants went 3-and-out, added another field
goal. Jones, to his credit, overcame a 4th-and-5 and a 4th-and-16 on the next
drive, and finished it off with a 19 yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate. The Giants
needed a two point conversion to tie for overtime, and Jones threw a pass to Lewis
that was a bit late, and could have been spotted better. It was knocked away,
but there was hope when the refs threw a flag for pass interference. After
they talked it over they picked up the flag. A number of calls against the Giants
were questionable in this game. The Giants had one last slim chance with the onside
kick, but that didn't work. The Giants lost another close game they could have
won, and Tampa Bay was a bit lucky tonight to get away with a 25-23 win."
"The
Giants were gifted a few weeks ago when head coach Ron Rivera decided to go for
a two point conversion to get a win for his Washington team, and avoid an overtime
outcome. His team failed, and the Giants got the one point win. Today, Bruce Arians
decided early on to go for two, so he would have a 17-14 lead in the third quarter.
It didn't work and the score was 15-14. It turned out to be another gift from
an opposing head coach. If he had taken the extra point kick, the Giants would
not have had the opportunity at the end of the game to tie the score to go into
overtime. Unfortunately, the Giants were not able to convert on this gift with
their own two point try, and they lost this game. They might have lost to
Tampa Bay anyway in overtime, but they didn't get a chance to see. If Daniel Jones
had made a better throw on that play, and on some others the Giants could have
come up with their second win of the season. Jones threw two touchdowns in this
game and had two interceptions. Tampa Bay capitalized on both turnovers, and scored
first with a field goal and then with a touchdown, accounting for 10 of their
total 25 points. Moving on, the offensive line played well and they were innovative,
including one 3rd-and-11 play where Golden Tate threw a pass to Wayne Gallman
that went for 18 yards. The running game was consistent. Gallman had 12 carries
for 44 yards and 1 touchdown. Alfred Morris, in his first game with the Giants,
had 8 carries for 28 yards, and tight end Evan Engram ran once for a 9 yard gain. The
defense looked good. They kept Tampa Bay out of the end zone in the first half,
forcing them to settle for two field goals. No other team has kept Tampa Bay touchdowns
off the score board in the first half this season. On the two drives in the second
half where Tom Brady did score touchdowns, he started off on the 33 and 34 yard
lines thanks to a good punt return, and an interception. The drives also included
penalties on the plays right before each of Tom Brady's touchdowns, giving him
first downs, one from the Giants 3-yard line, and then the 8-yard line. Daniel
Jones did a lot in winning his first career game ever against Tampa Bay, and tonight
he did a lot in losing this one for the Giants. He doesn't seem to be learning
from his mistakes as you would expect him to do in his second year. Next up will
be the Washington Football Team. The Giants will try to beat them for a second
time."
