Giants
win over the Texans 24-16 "I
couldn't believe how this game was going. The Giants started out with a touchdown
on their opening drive, but as much as they made plays and controlled the ball
for the rest of the half, they couldn't score any more points. The Giants were
lucky that the defense was able to hold the Texans to just one field goal, and
the score was 7-3 at the halftime break. Once again the Giants came out strong
in the second half, scoring their second touchdown of the day. On this drive,
Saquon Barkley ran the ball four straight times to get them close to midfield.
Then Daniel Jones threw a pass to Darius Slayton, and Slayton took it 54 yards
for a touchdown. That was very encouraging and it was nice to see the Giants
with a rare 11 point lead, until the Texans looked unstoppable on their next drive.
They pushed the Giants defense around, hitting no third down plays while driving
downfield to score a touchdown. It was hard to believe the Giants had held them
to just three points in the whole first half after seeing this. The Giants made
some long yardage plays on their next turn, and they finished things off with
Barkley running the ball in 2 yards for a touchdown, to put the Giants up 21-10. After
only 10 total points were scored in the whole first half of this game, suddenly
we had three touchdowns scored to start off the second. It looked like we were
about to see another, after the Giants next gave up a 46-yard pass. That gave
the Texans a first down at the Giants 9-yard line right at the end of the third
quarter. The Giants defense came up big though. On second down Leonard Williams
forced running back Dameon Pierce to fumble, and Jaylon Smith recovered the ball.
The Giants lead was protected, but after three straight runs by Barkley that
netted only nine yards, the Giants had to punt. After a few plays, Texans quarterback
Davis Mills threw a pass for a touchdown, but it was called back for offensive
holding. Then Mills next pass to the endzone was intercepted by safety Dane Belton.
The Giants ran the ball on all of their next plays, using up 5 minutes of
clock time before they punted. With time getting low, the Texans settled for a
fourth-down field goal, and then tried an onside kick which failed. Barkley ran
the ball three times, forcing the Texans to use their remaining time outs before
Graham Gano came in to kick a field goal. Now the Giants were once again up by
11 points, with just under two minutes left for the Texans. They kicked a
field goal with 7 seconds left, and tried another onside kick that also didn't
work. Jones took a knee to close out the game with a 24-16 win. Someone had
to remind me that the Giants were ahead on the scoreboard for this entire game.
It didn't feel that way, as nothing ever seems to come easy for this team."
"In
this game Saquon Barkley ran with the ball over twice as many times as Daniel
Jones threw it, and both were successful with their efforts. Jones completed 13
of his 17 passes for 197 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jones' 11.6 average yards a completion
was 5 yards more than his average of all the games up to now. Barkley rushed 35
times for 152 yards and 1 touchdown. It was obvious that the Giants wanted
to take advantage of the Texans poor rushing defense, and that plan worked. Darius
Slayton led the team with 3 catches for 95 yards and one touchdown. Slayton's
54-yard catch and run for a touchdown came on the opening drive of the third quarter,
giving the Giants a 14-3 lead. With tight end Daniel Bellinger sidelined with
an eye injury, Lawrence Cager was elevated off the practice squad, and he made
the most of his opportunity. Cager had caught the first of Jones two touchdown
passes. Kenny Golladay had a disappointing performance. He was in the game for
the first time since Week 4 due to a knee injury, and the hope was that Golladay
could finally show what he is capable of. Instead there were two passes, and two
incompletions, with one being an obvious drop. We didn't see Golladay on the field
after that in the second half. During all that time, Jones threw only five
more passes, completing four of them for 91 yards, The Giants kept to their game
plan, with 25 running plays in those last two quarters. The defense gave up a
few big plays, but made up for it with two big turnovers to keep the Texans at
bay. Dexter Lawrence and Leonard Williams kept the pressure up, and contributed
to the 4 sacks on Davis Mills. Williams forced a fumble on running back Dameon
Pierce, and safety Dane Belton came up with an end zone interception. The Giants
winning score was 24-16, and they'll be welcoming the Detroit Lions to MetLife
Stadium for the game next week. The
Giants are now 7-2. Let's see where that takes them next in the NFC East."
