Giants
lose to the Eagles 48-22 "The
Giants were heavy underdogs coming into this game, and that was to be expected
with the Eagles having the best record in the league. There was still that one
thought that the Eagles only loss of the season was to the Washington Commanders,
a division team. The Giants had just played to a tie with the Commanders last
week, so I was thinking maybe? Those thoughts didn't last long as the game
moved on. By the end of the second half the score was 24-7. The Giants had come
back before in games, but they continued to play poorly and that second half score
continued to grow. The Eagles started off the third quarter with a field goal,
and the Giants showed some life, scoring a touchdown with an impressive drive.
The Eagles came right back at them by scoring one of their own. The Giants
punted on their next turn, and the quarter ended with the Eagles up 34-14. The
next time the Giants had the ball, they went for it on a fourth-and-five from
their own 30 yard line, and Daniel Jones scrambled for six yards. With ten minutes
left they got down to the Eagles 23 yard line, and a fourth and eight pass play
failed. Four minutes later the Eagles scored another touchdown. With the score
at 41-14, the Giants subbed in backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor for Jones, and
two plays later he was sacked and fumbled the ball over. The Eagles backup was
now in as well, and he handed the ball off to running back Boston Scott four times
until he scored a touchdown. Taylor did better next time out working against an
Eagles defense that was anxious to see the final three minutes run off the clock.
Taylor ended the drive by throwing a 19 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver
Richie James. Taylor then completed a 2 point conversion pass to Isaiah Hodgins,
who had caught Jones first touchdown pass in the second quarter. The final score
was a lopsided 48-22. The Giants fell
behind from the start and it never got better. Not many expected to see the Giants
win this game with the Eagles, but they didn't even come close to making it look
like there was a chance."
"If
the Giants wanted to win this one, they knew they would have to have Daniel Jones
and Saquon Barkley keep the Eagles off balance with a combined rushing attack
they had been able to use earlier in the season. It's been missing for a while
now, and the results haven't been good. Today the Giants offensive line was no
match for the Eagles defense. Barkley started the Giants off with a 4 yard run.
Then Jones hit Isaiah Hodgins with a pass that went for 14 yards and a first down.
The good times ended on the next play when Jones was sacked for a 7 yard loss,
and sacked again two plays later to end the drive. Four of the Giants possessions
before the half ended with punts. The one that didn't was a special teams gift
to the offense after they blocked a punt that had Jones starting off at the Eagles
15-yard line. Three plays later Jones tossed a 2-yard touchdown pass to Hodgins.
The Eagles had scored on touchdowns on their first two possessions. Then keeping
with the spirit of giving, the Giants special teams unit gifted the Eagles the
ball at the Giants 33-yard line. Punter Jamie Gillan dropped a punt snap and kicked
ball while it was on the ground, which was an illegal kick penalty. The Giants
defense already had their hands full trying to stop the Eagles, and this time
Jalen Hurts hit A.J. Brown with a touchdown pass on the first play of the drive.
The Eagles later added a field goal, and the score was 24-7 at the half. By
the time the game was over, the Eagles had doubled their points to 48, and the
Giants added two touchdowns and a two-point conversion to finish with 22. Both
starting quarterbacks were pulled near the end. Jones had 1 passing and 1 rushing
touchdown. The Eagles defense hit Jones with 4 sacks, and Tyrod Taylor took 3.
Taylor in his limited time, threw 1 touchdown and actually finished as the leading
rusher, carrying the ball twice for 40 yards. Barkley, dealing with a neck
issue, carried the ball only 9 times for 28 yards, and caught 2 passes for 20
yards. The Eagles defense kept Darius Slayton under wraps. He was targeted only
3 times and caught 2 for 42 yards. Richie James was the leading receiver catching
7 of 9 for 61 yards, and 1 touchdown. Hodgins 4 catches for 38 yards included
1 touchdown. The Giants defense didn't play their best. They couldn't stop
Miles Sanders who had 2 touchdowns, and ran on them for 144 yards of the 253 total
rushing yards they gave up. They came up with 4 sacks on Hurts. Azeez Ojulari
had another standout game since returning last week. Against the Washington Commanders,
Ojulari had 1 sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Today he had 2 sacks,
2 quarterback hits and 2 tackles for loss. The Giants are now tied with Washington,
and have yet to win a division game. All the rest of them are on the road, and
starting next week they play the Commanders on Sunday night. The results of that
game could decide which team ends up with a Wild Card spot as the season winds
down."
