Giants
win over the Seahawks 29-20
"It
was around this time last year when the Giants played the Seahawks at MetLife
Stadium. It was a Monday night game and things started out well for the Giants,
even with Saquon Barkley and left tackle Andrew Thomas being inactive. Daniel
Jones was connecting on every pass, and along with Matt Breida and Wan'Dale Robinson,
running for yardage up until he was sacked at the Seattle 37-yard line. Soon facing
a 4th-and-1 from the 27-yard line, the Giants decided to go for it. I thought
that was a bad idea as I wanted to see the Giants score some first drive sure
points with an easy field goal. It turned out that I was right, even though
I didn't want to be, as the Giants ended the drive with a failed "tush push"
play as they call it. This also happened to be the turning point of the game even
if I didn't know it then, as rookie center John Michael Schmitz and tight end
Daniel Bellinger were both injured on that play and ended up out for the game.
The Giants went on to score only one field goal and took a 24-3 loss, which gave
them a 1-3 record. Today the Giants were coming into this game with that same
number of wins and losses, and I was hoping that this season would not continue
on the way it did last year. It wasn't encouraging to see Daniel Jones take
a sack for a ten yard loss on his first snap of the game. Soon it was 3rd-and-17,
when something good happened. Jones completed an 18 yard pass to running back
Eric Gray for a first down. Jones connected with Gray on the very next play for
19 yards. Unlike many previous games first downs kept happening, until Jones got
them to a 4th-and-goal from the Seattle 1-yard line. Gray
ran and fumbled near the goal line where the ball was recovered by a Seattle player
who returned it 102 yards for a touchdown. Suddenly the Giants were down 7-0 and
any thoughts I had about the Giants turning things around quickly left my mind. As
we all know by now, the Giants were able to shake that off and they came up with
a strong performance to take the win. It was tied 10-10 at halftime, and on Seattle's
first possession in the third quarter, cornerback Deonte Banks forced wide receiver
D.K. Metcalf to fumble at the Giants 21-yard line. Jones wasn't holding back,
and he started off with a 41-yard completion to Darius Slayton. Three plays later,
Jones finished this drive with a 30 touchdown pass to Slayton. The Giants were
up 17-10, and playing well on both sides of the ball, they stayed in front for
the rest of the game. Things got tricky when Seattle was at the Giants 28-yard
line, and tried for a field goal to tie the game. Linebacker Isaiah Simmons blocked
the field goal and wide receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton returned the ball 60 yards
for a touchdown. The Giants finished up with a 29-20 win today, and maybe they
have turned the season around."

"Last
year we said if you want to win games or at least look respectable losing them,
you have to score points. At that time the
Giants had scored only 46 points in four games. They came into this game only
a bit better with 60 points. That's really lacking, considering this year they
had been working with a healthy crew on offense, and an overall improved offensive
line. You didn't expect to see much offense today, as they entered this game against
the Seahawks without their top receiver and lead running back. Missing key players,
Brian Daboll was forced to use some of the other skilled players on his roster
and it worked out well. The offense scored 23 points and could have had 7 more
if running back Eric Gray didn't fumble the ball over to the Seahawks early on.
They were leaning heavily on Gray in the first possession and he had three catches
for 18, 19, and 13 yards, followed by two runs that gained no yards and included
that fumble. Gray didn't get many opportunities for the rest of the game, finishing
with 4 carries for 4 yards, and he was targeted just one more time with an incompletion. Rookie
Tyrone Tracy stood out in the running back role with 18 carries for 129 yards,
an impressive 7.2 yards a carry. The running game totaled 175 yards, the best
so far this season. It wasn't the offenses only strong point. Daniel Jones completed
23 of 34 passes for 257 yards, which included two touchdowns. Rookie Malik Nabers
has been Jones favorite target this year, but he was unavailable for this game
today. Darius Slayton saw 11 passes come his way, and he caught 8 of them for
122 yards and one touchdown. Wan'Dale Robinson caught the other touchdown pass. The
defense kept Geno Smith off balance hitting him with 7 sacks, and they gave up
only 13 of 20 points scored against the Giants. Dexter Lawrence had 3 of those
sacks, and he now has 6 on the year. Smith kept at it, and he threw 40 passes
to nine different players, but came up with only 1 touchdown. As far as the running
game went, it was Smith who came up with 72 yards on his four carries. His two
running backs each had more catches than runs, combining for just 7 carries for
30 yards. The Giants secondary kept Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf in check,
especially cornerback Deonte Banks, who punched the ball out of Metcalf's hands
for safety Tyler Nubin to recover. The Giants handled a tough task today, and
have another one coming up next Sunday night with the Cincinnati Bengals.
