Giants
lose to the Eagles 28-3
"The
Giants haven't done well in their home games this year. I
was hoping they would give the MetLife fans something to cheer about, but that
didn't happen today, not by a long shot. The Giants did manage to keep the Eagles
from scoring in the first quarter, but then in the second the Eagles had what
I would call the 'Saquon Barkley drive'. Barkley broke free and ran the ball 55
yards down the field. A few plays later, he ran it in for a touchdown. It
really hurt to see Barkley out there being so productive for the Eagles when he
could have been playing for us. On the Eagles next drive they didn't use Barkley.
The Giants defense was probably concerned they would when the Eagles decided to
go for a 4th-and-3 from the Giants 41-yard line. Jalen Hurts instead threw a long
pass to receiver A.J. Brown for their second touchdown. There was less than
two minutes left in the half when the Giants finally came up with a score. Daniel
Jones had been sacked on every drive so far except the opening one. This time
he wasn't, and from the Philadelphia 10-yard line he threw a touchdown pass to
tight end Theo Johnson! However, he was called for offensive pass Interference.
The ten yard penalty pushed the Giants back to the 20-yard line, and with no time
left, they had Greg Joseph kick a 38 yard field goal. The half ended with Philadelphia
leading with a 14-3 score. To start off the third quarter the Eagles went three-and-out,
and the Giants did the same. Then the Eagles added another touchdown. Their top
receiver Brown, and Barkley each had big plays, and it was Hurts who ran it in
one yard for a touchdown. On the Giants next turn they started running the ball
more using rookie Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary to get down to the Philadelphia
41-yard line, but the Eagles second sack on Jones killed the drive. We got
to see Barkley have a 31-yard run near the end of the third quarter, and the Eagles
finished things off with another Hurts one yard touchdown run to basically put
this game out of reach. Brian Daboll pulled Jones and put in backup quarterback
Drew Lock. He had no better pass protection than Jones, and the Giants ended up
with a 28-3 loss and a lot of disappointed fans."
"The
Giants offensive unit was almost back at full strength. Daniel Jones favorite
target Malik Nabers and running back Devin Singletary, were back in the lineup.
The notable exception was left tackle Andrew Thomas, who is out for the rest of
the season after having foot surgery. The offensive line has had the same five
starters play in every game. That changed today, and the Eagles front defensive
line and the Giants, were looking to see how well they would function without
their top offensive tackle protecting Jones blind side. It did not work out
well at all for the Giants, who managed to put up just three points in the second
quarter and none in all the rest. In the first half with no pass protection, it
led to 5 sacks when Daniel Jones was called on to do it all. There was no balanced
ground game support, as Brian Daboll had his running backs, Tyrone Tracy and Devin
Singletary, run with the ball just 3 times. Jones ran or scrambled with the ball
5 times, including for their only rushing first down in the half. Without a balanced
attack the Giants converted on just 2 of their 8 third downs. Between sacks,
Jones completed 13 of 19 passes for 6 first downs, with talented rookie Malik
Nabers catching 4 of those on his 6 targets for 41 yards. Nabers did make a costly
mistake near the end of the half on his last catch when he could have easily stepped
out of bounds. The Giants were driving and that cost them their final timeout.
Without much wriggle room with 28 seconds left, the Giants ended up with a field
goal after a touchdown catch was called back for an offensive penalty. Nabers
rookie mistake will probably linger in his mind as he had no more catches on the
day. As the third quarter moved on to the fourth, it was hard to believe that
the Giants offense, or an offense on any team, could be playing so poorly. The
Giants defense was treated to trying to keep Saquon Barkley contained. The Eagles
defense was able to keep the Giants off the field, and ran 65 total plays. There
was plenty of time for Barkley to break out on a number of them, and he did. Barkley
ended up with 17 carries for 176 yards and 1 touchdown. It was a reminder that
GM Joe Schoen may have made a big mistake allowing Barkley to walk right into
the arms of the eager Eagles. Daboll called more running plays in the second
half, but as the time moved on they needed to pass more, and the protection just
wasn't there. Jones took two more sacks bringing his total to 7. Daboll switched
to backup Drew Lock, and the Eagles notched one extra sack. Lock completed 3 of
8 passes for 6 yards. He did have one nice 13 yard first down run to bring the
rushing first downs to a grand total of 4. Wan'Dale Robinson was thrown to more
in the second half and finished second to Nabers with 6 catches for 23 yards.
The receiving yards total was 105. Rushing yards totaled 76, and the Giants have
a lot to figure out about how they run this offense. The defense came up with
four sacks, giving them a total of 31, just 3 short of the 34 they had all last
year. The Giants need to put this 28-3 loss behind them and prepare for a Monday
night match up with the Pittsburgh Steelers."
