Giants
lose to the Cowboys 27-20
"I
was hoping the Giants would serve us up a win on Thanksgiving Day. The appetizer
they served was a quick come back after the Cowboys kicked a field goal to start
the game. They scored a touchdown on their own first drive to put them up 7-3.
I can't remember when the Giants held an early lead in the first quarter this
season. Of course it didn't last long, as the Cowboys added another field goal,
followed by a touchdown when Drew Lock threw a pick six in the second quarter.
That gave the Cowboys a 13-7 lead. The Giants then fed me another appetizer
bit when they added a field goal, and went on to hold the Cowboys scoreless to
the end of the half. I was hungrier now, wanting more. I was anxious to get to
the main course of the day when the Giants next took the field. They started off
the second half, and Tyrone Tracy had two nice runs. Then when they were passing
the plate around at home, I turned to see Drew Lock take a sack at the Giants
36-yard line. To make things worse, Lock fumbled the ball over, and two minutes
later the Cowboys scored a touchdown. Next time out the Giants lost yards on
the three plays they had, including Lock taking another sack. That was followed
by the Cowboys scoring another touchdown to give them a 27-10 lead. It was close
to the fourth quarter, and some suggested we turn the TV off, but I couldn't have
it. The Giants did show some life after that, getting down to the Cowboys 25-yard
line. Then another sack on Lock, and a delay of game penalty led to a 3rd-and-17.
A pass to Wan'Dale Robinson got the Giants eight yards closer, and Graham Gano
kicked a field goal. That was meager compared to what the Giants needed at
this point in the game in the fourth quarter, trailing 27-13. The defense was
holding up, and the Giants started off their next drive with Lock throwing a nice
pass to Malik Nabers for 29 yards. Of course a flag was thrown, and the play was
called back because of offensive holding. That was like reaching to pick up one
of your your favorite wine bottles at the table only to find it empty. The Giants
ended up going three-and-out with Lock taking another sack. I wasn't expecting
to see much on their next turn, but Lock made a few good connections with Theo
Johnson and Nabers. Lock kept it going, and finished off his hurried drive by
scrambling with the ball to the endzone for a touchdown. The score was 27-20,
and like many on Thanksgiving Day watching the game or not, I was looking for
more. It turned out there was no more to be had. Lock and his suddenly efficient
group, never got back on the field before the game ended. At the home gathering
things ended up well, as everyone agreed not to talk politics, about this Giants
game, or the next to follow."
"The
Giants were behind from the start, as the Cowboys scored a field goal on the first
drive of the game. Surprisingly, the Giants scored a touchdown right after that
to take a 7-3 lead. Not surprisingly after that, the offense couldn't keep it
going. The Giants defense held the Cowboys to just one more field goal in the
first half. It's not their fault that the Cowboys took the lead, scoring seven
more points when Drew Lock threw an interception returned for a touchdown. The
Giants offense closed the gap when they came up with a field goal to make it a
13-10 game near the end of the half. The 14 points the Cowboys scored in the
third quarter went unanswered, putting the game almost out of reach at 27-10.
To their credit, the Giants held the Cowboys scoreless in the fourth quarter,
and came up with 10 points, with a chance to add more. They never got that chance,
as they couldn't get the Cowboys off the field after the two minute warning.
Moving on, Brian Daboll will have to
figure if Lock or Tommy DeVito will be the starting quarterback working behind
an offensive line that continues to be a problem. Lock took six sacks in the game,
and there were no touchdowns thrown. Lock completed 21 of his 32 passes for 178
yards, had a fumble turnover, and one costly interception. Lock ended up being
the leading rusher with his four carries for 57 yards, and he had one rushing
touchdown. Tyrone Tracy was second with 32 yards on 9 carries, and he ran for
the Giants other touchdown. The Giants were just 3 of 12 on third down conversion
attempts. The defense came up with no sacks, and no turnovers against Cowboys
backup quarterback Cooper Rush. The Giants have gone 11 straight games now without
an interception, an NFL record. One of the Cowboys weaknesses was with their rushing
attack, and the Giants didn't capitalize on that. The Giants gave up 122 total
rushing yards, and running back Rico Dowdle had a career high 112 yards. Dowdle
had never gotten past 87 yards in a single game. In a season the Giants are celebrating,
they have won only two games, both on the road. There are only three home games
left. The season is all but done, and the Giants next game is at home against
the New Orleans Saints. One win won't change very much, but let's see if the Giants
can give the fans that show up at MetLife stadium at least a little something
to celebrate this year."
