Giants
lose to the Eagles 20-13
"It
was a lackluster game and another loss by the Giants to finish up the season.
The way the Giants played this week looked nothing like they did last Sunday against
the Indianapolis Colts where they scored 45 points. The Eagles were sitting their
starters, and still at the end of the half the Giants had no points. They were
trailing by just 10 points thanks to the Eagles kicker missing on a 39-yard field
goal. On their first drive in the third quarter it looked like the Giants were
finally getting their act together. Tyrone Tracy had some nice runs, and Drew
Lock threw a long pass to tight end Chris Manhertz. I was hoping for a touchdown
the way things were going, but with a fourth down on the Eagles 7-yard line, Graham
Gano came in for a 25 yard field goal. I was actually glad to see that, because
Brian Daboll has been a little trigger happy going for it on fourth down plays.
At least the Giants had three points to show for their efforts. They didn't score
again until after the Eagles added another touchdown which had them trailing 17-10.
That was in the fourth quarter when Lock threw a deep pass to Nabers for a 45
yard touchdown. Then the Giants defense cracked down, and came up with a 10-yard
sack on Eagles quarterback Tanner McKee. After a good punt return, Lock had the
ball back in his hands at the Eagles 38 yard line. The Giants would tie the score
with a touchdown, but two offensive line penalties limited them to Gano kicking
a 53 yard field goal which now had the Giants behind by four points with half
the fourth quarter left to play. The defense then let the Eagles dink and
dunk their way along, using up six and a half minutes, and they contributed two
penalties. That gave the Eagles two extra first downs, and now all the Giants
timeouts were gone. After two plays, Lock threw an interception with 24 seconds
left in the game, and that was it. The Giants ended up with a 20-13 loss, and
finished up this dreadful season last place in the division, with a 3-14 record."
"The
Eagles rested starters, and the Giants rotated some starters in and out. Backup
quarterback Tanner McKee made good use of one regular starter the Giants wished
they didn't see on the field. Tight end Dallas Goedert had missed the last four
games due to a knee injury, and he was in for a little workout today to prepare
for the playoffs. Goedert caught 4 of six passes in the first half, and all four
of his catches went for nine plus yards, and all were first downs. During the
half Drew Lock had completed 8 of 11 passes, but for only 30 yards. It was either
him or the play calling, because Lock looked nothing like the quarterback he was
last week. Then Lock completed 17 of his 20 passes for 309 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Today he finished with 138 yards on 29 passes, with 22 completions and 1 touchdown.
Lock's one interception was on a try to make something happen play, a deep pass
right near the end of the game. Wan'Dale
Robinson showed he has good hands, accounting for nearly half of Lock's completions,
he had 10 catches and missed on just one. Robinson came up with only 43 yards
for all that, as head coach Brian Daboll didn't seem to be looking for Lock to
throw deep in this game for one reason or another. One time when Lock did,
it was his longest completion of the day to Malik Nabers, for a 45-yard catch
and run for a touchdown. Nabers did that by breaking tackles, and dancing along
the sideline to the endzone. Nabers final catch of the day added to his four others
to give him a total 64 yards. Now that the season is over we'll next find out
if general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Daboll will be back. If so maybe
Daboll won't be calling the plays any more."
