Giants (2-5) Eagles (5-2)
The Eagles traveled to Minnesota last Sunday,
and controlled the game from start to finish. They took an early lead and never
let go, winning this matchup with the Vikings 28-23. The
Giants had a winnable game on their hands holding a 19-0 lead over the Denver
Broncos in the fourth quarter. The Broncos started scoring points, and took the
lead. The Giants took it back, but a Broncos closing game field goal, gave them
a 33-32 win. Philadelphia
Eagles The Eagles started off the season
by winning their first four games, Then they lost two before getting back on track
last week with a win over the Minnesota Vikings. They are currently in first place
in the NFC East with a 5-2 record. The Eagles have done this by scoring just 5
points more on the season than they have given up, 170-165. Can they continue
playing the way they have for another Super Bowl appearance, giving them a chance
to win a second one in a row? Philadelphia
Eagles Offense The
Eagles had scored just 17 points in each of their last two losing games. Jalen
Hurts did what he had to last week with his throwing arm, completing 19 of 23
passes for 326 yards, with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. His running skills
weren't typical, carrying the ball 4 times for minus-10 yards, but when a quarterback
is completing 82.6 percent of his passes, averaging 14.2 yards a completion, you'd
stick with that. Hurts has 11 touchdowns on the season with just one interception,
in the teams loss to the Giants. Continuing at this rate, those numbers would
be the best in his six year career. Hurts wasn't running last week, and Saquon
Barkley didn't help the cause, carrying the ball 18 times for 44 yards, a 2.4
percent average. On the year he's averaging 3.3 yards a game, the lowest of his
career except for 2002 when he played in only two games. Barkley's run for over
60 yards just once so far, and the team's average of 88 yards a game has them
three spots from the bottom in the league. Hurts had been struggling for a
time getting the ball to A.J. Brown. Their connection for deep passes improved
quite a bit last week. Two touchdown passes were for 37 and 26 yards, and Brown's
45 yard catch with less than a minute left had them closing out the game. Not
to be outdone, DeVonta Smith caught 9 of 11 targets for a career high 183 yards,
including a 79 yard touchdown. Brown has missed practice this week due to a hamstring
injury, and starting center Cam Jurgens was dealing with a knee issue. Both have
been ruled out for this game.
Philadelphia Eagles
Defense Last season this defense was the
second best team in keeping points off the board, and they're currently 20th.
Rushing defense has slipped from 10th to 22nd. Pass defense from 1st to 19th.
They had 41 sacks last year, and edge rusher Josh Sweat was their top sack leader
with 8 sacks. Nolan Smith Jr. was the second on the list with 6.5, and Milton
Williams had 5. They lost Sweat and Williams in the offseason, and Smith is on
injured reserve, expected back after the Eagles bye week. So far the Eagles have
come up with just 11 sacks in their 7 games. Defensive tackle Moro Ojomo leads
the team with 3, and Jordan Davis and linebacker Zack Baun each have two. Edge
rusher Za'Darius Smith is next with 1.5 sacks, but he recently surprised everyone,
announcing his retirement days after the last Giants game. Meanwhile defensive
end Brandon Graham, who holds the Eagles record for most regular season games
played (206), is back in the mix. Graham last played in their Super Bowl win,
came out of retirement this week, and had his first practice on Wednesday. Giants
rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart seemed to surprise this defense in their last game
with his scrambling abilities. Dart took off on them 13 times for 58 yards, which
included 5 first downs and 1 touchdown. If the Eagles had geared up for running
back Cam Skattebo, Dart's distractions may have helped him have his second best
rushing day, with 19 carries for 98 yards and 3 touchdowns. You know the Eagles
have paid attention to how the Broncos handled that last week. Though Dart did
have a 1 yard reach-over the pile touchdown, his 5 carries were for 11 yards. Giants
Offense They came up with 32 points last
week in Denver, and lost the game. It's hard to find fault when the quarterback
throws for 283 yards and 3 touchdowns, and runs for another, but there was that
one costly interception. It came at a time when the Broncos needed it the most,
and four plays later they had a touchdown. Even though Dart was completing just
short of half his passes, 9 of 19, he had thrown for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns
by the end of the first two quarters, and taken just one sack. Those first half
numbers were his best. After that Dart threw 14 passes and completed just
6, with 1 touchdown and 1 interception, and took 3 sacks. Tight end Daniel Bellinger
has sure hands, and on the season has caught 10 of 11 passes, for 173 yards (17.3
avg), with 8 first downs and one touchdown. Last week Bellinger was 3 of 4 for
88 yards, and one touchdown in the first half. He wasn't targeted at all in the
2nd half. Dart doesn't call the plays, but if your quarterback is struggling for
receivers to catch and make first downs, why isn't Bellinger more in the mix?
Dart didn't have Darius Slayton, and has been without Malik Nabers. Wan'Dale Robinson
has been his biggest target. Their connection wasn't as good in Denver, but last
time against the Eagles, Robinson caught 6 of 7 passes for 84 yards and 1 touchdown.
In that game, defensive end Jalen Carter wasn't playing, and they lost top cornerback
Quinyon Mitchell in the first quarter. Both of them will be back for this game.
They will be without former Giants cornerback Adoree Jackson, and Kelee Ringo
hasn't been playing his best. Giants
Defense This defensive unit needs to take
a hard look at itself when it comes to closing out games. Thanks to them two of
the Giants three highest point scoring games ended up being losses, Cowboys 40-37,
and the Broncos 33-32. The Giants won the other one when the defense did its job,
Giants 34 - Eagles 17. This is the same defense that corralled the Eagles two
weeks ago. The linebacker group will have Swayze Bozeman and Victor Dimukeje in
for this game, but will be missing Chauncey Golston. Saquon
Barkley has gotten off to fast starts in games before teams seem to realize they
have to buckle down and commit. Barkley did the same to the Giants In their last
game. In the first half, Barkley was on the way to his first 100 yard plus game
of the season. In the second, he had 4 carries for 2 yards, ending up with a total
of 58. Jalen Hurts wasn't running much, connecting on almost every pass to A.J.
Brown and Dallas Goedert in the first half. The Giants slowed him down in the
second, but Goedert caught 9 of 11 for 110 yards a 1 touchdown. For this game
the Eagles will be without Brown, their best receiver, and though Goedert was
dealing with a calf injury, he looks set to go. The Eagles will have their tight
end working with DeVonta Smith to keep their passing game going. The Eagles offensive
line has been struggling, and will be shuffling again without their starting center
playing. That should give the Giants an extra advantage. Brian Burns is listed
as questionable, but expected to play. In the secondary . cornerback Paulson Adebo
is out, so Deonte Banks will be seeing more action. Overall It's
Giants-Eagles. Been there and done that. Can the Giants do it again? Their second
highest scoring game was that 34-17 win over the Eagles. If the Giants had closed
out two other games that they should have won, this one in Philadelphia would
have been a division battle for first place. The Giants will try to get back on
track, and the Eagles will be out to show it isn't easy to win one in Philadelphia. NFC
