Giants
lose to the Bears 24-20
"The
Giants didn't start off their opening drive with a touchdown, so that jinx was
off their chests. Just kidding for how some of those other games turned out. They
waited until the second quarter to score for the first time, when Jaxson Dart
started connecting with Darius Slayton. Dart threw two deep passes back to back,
and the first one Slayton caught went for 31 yards. It was a sensational one handed
catch! On the second one Slayton was able to run for some additional yards, for
a total of 38 yards. That got them to the Chicago 11-yard line. Dart threw
a short pass to sure-handed Daniel Bellinger, and he bullied it forward 8 yards.
Devin Singletary picked up no yardage on second down, and Dart next ran the ball
in for a touchdown. That tied the score at 7-7, as the Bears had scored earlier.
It was impressive, and on their next drive, they had a 4th-and-1 on the Chicago
1-yard line. I was thinking maybe field goal, but they went for it, and Dart’s
pass to tight end Bellinger was too high to bring down in the endzone. The
defense was doing their job, and on Dart's next turn, he did his again, this time
with Theo Johnson. He took Dart's short pass 21 yards downfield, and on the next
play Johnson caught a deep 25 yard pass to get them to the Chicago 14-yard line.
Three incomplete passes later, Younghoe Koo, our new kicker, came in and his field
goal put the Giants up 10-7, and that was the halftime score. The Giants didn't
score a touchdown to start the game. They saved that to open up the start of the
second half. Tyrone Tracy had a 5-yard run, and a few plays later, a nice 16-yard
run. It was good to see him get in stride for the first time in this game. Then
Dart took off for a 24 yard touchdown run. The Giants were up 17-7, and the defense
kept doing their job. On the Giants next drive, Dart was running the ball into
the Bear's red zone, when he was tackled and fumbled it over. The Giants defense
had trouble this time, but held tight on their 4-yard line, and Chicago settled
for a field goal. The fourth quarter started, and two plays into the Giants drive,
suddenly Russell Wilson was on the field. I didn't know why, but after Devin Singletary
turned a short pass into a 41 yard catch and run, the Giants were soon down to
the Chicago 1-yard line. Two runs on on second and third down didn't get them
in, and Koo kicked another field goal. It turned out that Dart was out of the
game with a concussion. Both teams went nowhere on their next drives, but then
the Giants defense gave up some big plays, and the Bears scored a touchdown that
cut the Giants lead to 20-17. There were only four minutes left, but a three-and-out
with Wilson being sacked twice, had the Giants off the field fast. It cost the
Bears two timouts, but they didn't need any. In fact, the Giants used one of theirs,
as our defense played as poorly as they did the last time the Bears had the ball.
A poor punt had them starting near midfield, and I was hoping they could be held
to a field goal for a tie game headed into overtime. Four plays later, with the
defense giving up two big ones, Chicago scored a touchdown to take a 24-20 lead.
Now the Giants needed to score one as well with less than two minutes left. Wilson
had one scramble for 11 yards, but then a completion to Tracy for zero yards,
followed by three short incompletions, ended the game for the Giants. I thought
the Giants were going to win this one, but then in the fourth quarter..."
"The
Giants looked to have the game in hand, but they couldn't keep their hands on
Caleb Williams. The scrappy quarterback was able to evade all the pressure and
hits they put on him in the first half. They had him throwing off on some passes,
and there were no sacks. They limited Williams to 3 scrambles for 6 yards. Chicago's
lead running back D'Andre Swift, was hard to contain, and he had one 25-yard run.
They kept running back Kyle Monangai mostly in check, four carries for 13 yards,
but one of his was an 8-yard touchdown in the first quarter. The Giants had
a 10-7 lead at the end of the half, coming up with two scores in the second quarter.
Dart threw two deep passes to Darius Slayton, and later ended the drive rushing
for a 3-yard touchdown. The next time Dart had two big completions, it was to
tight end Theo Johnson, and Younghoe Koo later came in to kick a field goal. The
running backs weren't giving Dart much to work with during the half. He was doing
it all himself, carrying the ball 2 times for 21 yards and that one touchdown.
Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary provided a total of just 2 yards on 8 carries. Tracy
came alive in the third quarter, gaining 5 yards on his first carry and 16 on
his next. Still, it was Dart, who was
soon the one running with the ball for a 24 yard touchdown. That was his second
rushing touchdown of the game, giving the Giants a 17-7 lead. Running did Dart
in though on his next drive, when he fumbled the ball and it led to him being
placed on concussion protocol shortly into the next series. Russell Wilson took
over, and the Giants added another field goal to match the one the Bears came
up with on the pervious drive. That turned out to be it for the Giants, as
their last three possessions were pitiful. Taking away their penalties and the
sack yardage lost, the total 12 plays they ran netted them 7 yards. The defense
was also hard to watch, as during that time, the Bears three possessions netted
them two touchdowns. That was enough for them to secure a 24-20 win over the Giants,
who held a 10 point lead with most of the fourth quarter gone. Wilson's numbers
were 3 completions on 7 passes for 45 yards. He carried the ball 2 times for 12
yards, and took 2 sacks. The Giants defense kept the pressure up on Williams in
the second half, but there were no sacks or turnovers as he scrambled away and
made big plays. Williams and his two backs ran all over the Giants with their
28 carries for 171 yards. Once Dart left the game, the Giants fell apart on both
sides of the ball. The Giants will have a tough time if Dart can't play, and Green
Bay is coming up next."
