Giants
lose to the Packers 27-20
"I
didn't know what I expected to see today. The Giants didn't have Jaxson Dart in
at quarterback, and they had just fired head coach Brian Daboll. It was encouraging
to see backup quarterback Jameis Winston look in control, getting off passes to
Wan'Dale Robinson and Isaiah Hodgins. Devin Singletary finished the Giants first
drive off with a 5-yard touchdown run. The Giants defense looked good on the Packers
first drive, but their next two resulted in touchdowns before the Giants could
score again. That was right near the end of the half, when Singletary scored
his second touchdown of the day. This time on a 2-yard run to tie the game at
13-13. The Packers started off the second half with a touchdown, and missed on
their extra point for the second time. The Giants had missed on their second one
when Younghoe Koo had to kick from further back because of a penalty. It was
a real windy day, and that might have affected some of Mike Kafka's thoughts on
punting and kicking. The 'newly elected' head coach had the Giants go for it on
4th-and-1 from the Giants 36-yard line, which I still thought was a little crazy
when Singletary didn't make it on third down. This time he gained 2 yards to keep
things going. A few plays later it was a 4th-and-3 near midfield, and Winston
hit Hodgins with a 12-yard pass. I wasn't surprised when the Giants got down to
the Packers 10-yard line, and lined up again for another 4th-and-3 try. It
doesn't always work, and this time Winston took a seven yard sack, and it was
a turnover on downs. It was good to see the defense quickly get the Packers off
the field with a 3-and-out. The Giants next drive ran a long way into the fourth
quarter. It included another fourth down play at the Packers 22-yard line. A 13-yard
pass completion to Hodgins got them the two yards they needed and more. On a 2nd-and-goal,
Winston kept the ball and ran for a 1-yard touchdown. The extra point was good,
and the Giants had a 20-19 lead! Of course, the Giants defense couldn't keep
the Packers from scoring a touchdown right after that. But wait, with four minutes
left, Winston was completing passes, and both running backs were clicking, and
they had a first down at the Packers 18 yard line. Things were going so well,
then suddenly on third down, Winston and Jalin Hyatt weren't on the same page,
and the Packers came up with an easy interception. There were just seconds left
when Winston got the ball back, only to have the Packers hit him with a sack fumble
to end things, with the Giants taking a 27-20 loss. The Giants keep teasing you
that they might win a game, and even when it doesn't work, as a fan you'll come
back for more. Your next 'opportunity' will be Sunday when the Giants take on
the Lions in Detroit."
"The
Giants made some changes with a new fill in head coach and quarterback, but they
need to make a few more. Unfortunately, it's hard to field a good offense with
top players like Jaxson Dart, Cam Skatteboo, Malik Nabers and Darius Slayton not
playing. Jameis Winston proved to be a more than adequate backup quarterback.
In the first half he completed 8 of 11 passes for 86 yards to four different receivers,
and missed on one pass to tight end Theo Johnson. The running game during
that time was off to a better start than last week, with Tyrone Tracy and Devin
Singletary combining on 14 carries for 43 yards and 2 touchdowns. The offensive
line run blocking was there today, and those two added 21 more carries for 89
more yards, to finish the day with 132 total rushing yards. Winston also carried
the ball 3 times for 10 yards and had 1 touchdown run. The defense sacked Jordan
Love once in the first half by Brian Burns, and he was 6 of 13, completing less
than half his passes. Some of that was on Love's receivers dropping passes. Love
had to step out at one point, and Malik Willis came in to get the Packers their
one passing touchdown. Josh Jacobs had no problem running on the Giants, and Emanuel
Wilson had 1 rushing touchdown in that first half. Love had a better connection
with his receivers in the second half, and came up with 2 passing touchdowns.
With Jacobs out at that point, the Giants were able to slow down the rushing attack.
Up front, outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux was out for this game, and Burns
came up with one more sack to give him two before things were over. The Packers
scored a touchdown every time they got into the redzone. It didn't help the
Giants that cornerback Paulson Adebo had a knee issue in the pregame warmups,
and wasn't able to play. Then rookie cornerback Korie Black had to leave in the
second quarter with a hand injury. The Giants had the lead in the fourth quarter
when Winston scored with his touchdown run, but the Packers took it right back,
and went on to close out the game with a 27-20 win. The Giants took their fifth
straight loss, and hopefully will hear better news on the injury front before
they play in their next game."
