Giants
lose to the Lions 34-27
"I
can't believe it happened again. The Giants started off the game with an opening
drive touchdown. Jameis Winston got them there on just four plays. Aside from
connecting with Darius Slayton for 23 yards, there was his 39 yard touchdown pass
to Wan'Dale Robinson. On the Giants third drive Winston let it fly again, and
Robinson had three catches, a 12, a 15 and a 40 yard completion. The Giants were
winning 10-0. After the Lions scored, Winston threw a 12-yard pass to wide receiver
Isaiah Hodgins for a touchdown. The Giants were now up 17-7. They scored 3
more points, but the Lions kept at it, and by the end of the half the score was
20-17. Late in the third quarter the Lions were on their way to closing that gap
or moving ahead, but the defense came up with a sack by Rakeem Nunez-Roches and
then an interception by safety Jevon Holland. The Giants had a long way to
go, but Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary ground out some tough yards for first
downs, including Tracy's catch that he took for a 20-yard gain. Then there was
an unusual flea flicker play where wide receiver Gunner Olszewski took the ball
from Winston, then passed it back to Winston downfield. Winston refused to be
stopped by a tackler, and stiff armed his way to the end zone for a 32-yard touchdown.
The Giants were now up by 10 points again, 27-17 in the fourth quarter. My excitement
didn't last long though as the defense
let up a big 49-yard touchdown run by the Lions top running back Jahmyr Gibbs,
three plays later. I was worried that the Giants shaky three point lead wouldn't
hold up, when Winston's first pass on his next turn was intercepted, and the Lions
had the ball at the Giant's 45-yard line. Surprisingly, the defense stepped up
and the Lions gained just one yard before going three-and-out. I wasn't too
far off with my thoughts though, because the Giants handed over another opportunity
when the they failed on a fourth down attempt from the Lions 6-yard line. I
couldn't believe they gave up a chance to go up six points, which would force
the Lions to come up with a touchdown to win with just over two minutes left in
the game. Well of course the Lions tied up the game with a field goal. Of
course they scored a touchdown on the first play in overtime, when Gibbs ran it
69-yards into the end zone as soon as he got his hands on the ball. Of course
the Giants couldn't score a touchdown to tie things up on their turn. Of course
the Giants took another loss after holding a lead into the fourth quarter. Of
course I'm fed up with all this, as they seem to have the ability to win games,
and then just don't."
"Running
back Jahmyr Gibbs was the Lions ticket to success. Gibbs caught one touchdown
pass, and had two rushing touchdowns, including the one in the overtime period
to seal them the win. That accounts for 21 points, more than half the total 34
his team scored. On the Lions two field goals, his plays on those drives included
3 first downs to help get them in range. Gibbs alone came up with 259 total yards
with his 15 carries and 11 receptions. Where was the Giants defense? Dexter
Lawrence was used mostly on passing downs, while dealing with an elbow issue.
Lawrence wasn't on the field for a number of plays. The Lions took note of that,
and his run blocking was sorely missed. That was especially so when Gibbs had
his 69-yard game winning touchdown run in overtime, when Lawrence wasn't out there. The
Giants offensive line has been playing well, and Jameis Winston took full advantage
of that, completing 18 of his passes for 366 yards and 2 touchdowns, and he had
one touchdown catch. Winston did throw one interception, but the defense didn't
let the Lions capitalize on that. Wan'Dale Robinson caught 9 passes for 156 yards
and 1 touchdown. Theo Johnson pulled in 3 passes for 77 yards, and Tyrone Tracy
was third with 3 catches for 68 yards. Tracy and Devin Singletary combined for
109 rushing yards. The offense showed they could bring it, and could have
had 30 points on the board, which might have given them a win. The Giants led
the whole game with 27, and once again the defense didn't do its job. If the Giants
had limited the Lions to a field goal on their opening overtime drive, they could
had tied things up on their turn. Winston got them to a 4th-and-5 at the Lions
27 yard line, but now they couldn't kick a field goal to tie things up. Winston
took his first sack of the day, and the game was over. Some coaching decisions
on offense and defense may have resulted in them losing this one. Jaxson Dart
could likely be available for the Giants next game against the Patriots. Winston
has shown good leadership, and has played well in his two starts, especially today.
The Giants could delay using Dart to be sure he's truly fit, as they have a bye
week after this upcoming game. It will be interesting to see what they do."
