Giants
win over the Cowboys 34-17
"The
Giants defense gave the Cowboys a small taste of what they were in for today,
recovering a fumble on the Cowboys opening drive. A few plays later Ben Sauls
kicked a field goal and the Giants had an early 3-0 lead. The defense gave up
a big running play on the Cowboys next drive, but stopped them cold at the 4-yard
line. The Cowboys settled for a field goal to tie the game. On his turn, Jaxson
Dart hit Gunner Olszewski with a 28-yard pass. Then he scrambled and had a first
down at the Cowboys 10-yard line, but after a sack and lost yardage, they settled
for another field goal to put the Giants ahead again. It was too bad they fell
short, because the Cowboys came up with a big kickoff return all the way down
to the Giants 10-yard line. Two plays later, the Cowboys had a touchdown, and
10-6 lead. On the Giants next drive Dart got things going again with some nice
passes to Darius Slayton, Daniel Bellinger, and Tyrone Tracy. They got down to
the Cowboys 2-yard line, but once again ended up with a field goal. Dak Prescott
got his unit on the move and had a fourth down a few yards short of the Giants
goal line. The Cowboys took a timeout to think things over, and decided to go
for it. It was a mistake as the Giants defense put enough pressure on Prescott
to force an incompletion. That left the Giants with about three minutes left
in the first half to come up with some points, or at least keep the Cowboys offense
off the field. They did chew up the clock, and with twenty seconds left with a
3rd-and-16 at the Cowboys 29-yard line, it looked like the Giants would soon be
kicking yet another field goal. I thought that might even be off the table when
the Cowboys were chasing Dart down on the next play. Dart surprised me, and everyone
else for that matter, when he backhand flipped it to Bellinger, who caught it
and worked his way past defenders for a touchdown to put the Giants up 16-10. In
the second half the fun continued, at least for Giants fans. Dart threw a 13-yard
touchdown pass to Tracy, who was having a great day with both his running and
catching. The Giants decided to go for two, and instead of Devin Singletary trying
to bull-rush his way in, he threw a pass to Slayton for the two points, and a
comfortable 24-10 lead. After that the Cowboys missed on a 57-yard field goal,
but two minutes later Tracy fumbled after a catch, and the Cowboys got their act
together working with Joe Milton, who had taken over from Prescott to start the
half. That touchdown cut the point gap to 7, but before you could think the Giants
were once again going to blow a fourth quarter lead, the added a field goal. Bobby
Okereke intercepted Milton on the first play after that, and Singletary's touchdown
run made it 34-17, which became the final score. After a long hard season, it
was great to see the Giants close things out with two strong wins."
"It
was a great job for the Giants working
without two of their regular offensive line starters. Jaxson
Dart again didn't have left tackle Andrew Thomas, and his center John Michael
Schmitz, was also placed on injured reserve. Dart was also missing Wan’Dale Robinson
and Theo Johnson, and despite that, the passing and running were effective working
against the Cowboys defense. Tyrone Tracy ran for over a hundred yards, 103 to
be exact, the highest this season, on his 18 carries. Tracy was also there for
Dart catching the ball, missing on only one, he caught 8 for 56 yards, and one
touchdown. Gunner Olszewski also caught 8 of 9 for 5 first downs and 102 yards.
All through the season they've used Olszewski for his other skills, and not as
a receiver. Before this game Olszewski had 2 receptions on 4 targets, but he really
made one count, as it was a 24 yard touchdown catch. Olszewski was also given
an added opportunity on a trick play, throwing for a touchdown, but he kind of
messed that one up, throwing short to tight end Chris Manhertz. Olszewski
had a similar situation during an earlier game the Giants played against the Detroit
Lions, when he threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jameis Winston. Daniel Bellinger
also did his part today. He caught the two passes Dart threw to him, and one went
for a 29-yard touchdown. It was right near the end of the half on a 3rd-and-16
play. Dart got maybe more than he expected when Bellinger took it all the way
in, to put the Giants up 16-3. With 15 seconds remaining Dak Prescott took
a knee, and that was the last play he was involved with for the rest of the game.
Joe Milton stepped in, but he didn't have CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens to throw
to in the final two quarters, as the Cowboys focused on player health going into
the off season. Milton completed 7 of his 13 passes for 73 yards, and there was
one interception by Bobby Okereke. The Giants scored on two touchdowns and
a field goal in the final quarters, and the Cowboys were limited to one touchdown.
The Giants finished up the game, and the season, with a 34-17 win over the Cowboys.
The Giants celebrated the victory by giving John Mara a game ball."
