Giants
lose to the Saints 34-27
"I
was enjoying this game up until near the end of the second quarter. The Giants
had come up with a nice touchdown when Tyrone Tracy caught a pass from Jameis
Winston in the first quarter, and got himself a 17-yard touchdown. The Giants
added a field goal, and that put them up 10-0 over the Saints with two and a half
minutes left in the second quarter. Even though the Saints managed to get
themselves a field goal, the Giants were getting the ball back with maybe enough
time to finish off the half with another score. It ended up the other way around,
when the kickoff returner fumbled the ball over to the Saints at the Giants 28-yard
line. The Saints came up with another score, and we had a 10-10 halftime tie. The
Saints got the ball to start off the third quarter, and a few minutes later added
another touchdown. The Giants went three-and-out, and the Saints kept marching
on. They were up 27-10 at the end of the quarter, helped along by Winston throwing
an interception. He threw another one in the fourth quarter, and two plays later,
the Saints had another touchdown. It seemed like a good time to see what J.J.
McCarthy could do, but five plays later, he threw an interception, and it seemed
like a good time for fans to leave the stadium. That would have been a mistake,
as a minute later, the Giants defense caused a fumble, and they had the ball near
midfield. There were nine and a half minutes left, and McCarthy showed what he
could really do. He led the team on to score two touchdowns and one field goal.
The fired up defense shoved the Saints off the field, with three three-and-outs
on their series during that time. The Giants were now trailing by seven points,
and had just under a minute left with the ball on their own 29-yard line. It was
exciting to see McCarthy start off with a 28 yard scramble. He spiked the ball,
and then hit Isaiah Likely with a 20 yard pass. Another spike and a 9 yard catch,
led to spiking the ball on third down because there was only 12 seconds left.
The next pass to Likely from the 14-yard line was incomplete, and suddenly it
was all over, a 34-27 loss. The Giants almost did it. I mean aside from coming
back to maybe win this game. I mean they almost made me, and all the other Giants
fans watching this game go crazy."
"The
Giants got off to a fast start for a change with Jameis Winston throwing a touchdown
pass to Tyrone Tracy. Their 7-0 lead went deep into the second quarter with the
defense holding strong. Winston had them in field goal range when he was sacked
and had to leave the field. A roughing the passer call on the Saints put the Giants
closer. J.J. McCarthy came in to play, and now had a first down at the Saints
14-yard line. I thought maybe we'd see him him finish off the series. After he
took snap and scrambled for a two yard loss, I guess they saw enough, and Winston
was right back in. Two plays later a field goal had the Giants up 10-0 over the
Saints. The game seemed to be well in hand for the Giants the way they were
playing near the end of the half. The Saints were anxious to get points on the
board, and even though their kicker, Daniel Carlson, missed on an earlier
55-yard field goal attempt, they had him try a 58-yarder, and he made it. The
Giants 10-3 lead didn't last long, as the special teams unit let them down. Charlie
Jones returned the kickoff, and he fumbled the ball over to the Saints at the
Giants 28-yard line. The Giants can't keep gifting teams with fumble recoveries
that keep them alive. The defense, maybe caught by surprise having to suddenly
come back on the field, allowed quarterback Tyler Shough to scramble 25 yards
to the Giants 3-yard line. The defense buckled down, as three running plays later,
the Saints had gained just 1 yard, but on fourth down Shough threw a touchdown
pass, and the score was 10-10 at the half. Looking over the numbers, the Giants
had one impressive 93-yard touchdown drive with some big plays. Aside from Likely
doing what he does, catching a 24-yard pass, it was wide receiver Darnell Mooney
with a 20 yard run, and running back Tracy with a 17-yard touchdown catch. The
biggest issue was the rushing attack, which was was non existent. The three running
backs, Najee Harris, Devin Singletary, and Tracy, combined for 8 carries totaling
9 yards, which was less than Mooney's single run, and Cam Skattebo - no carries. Winston
had played clean, throwing for one touchdown and no interceptions, though he took
3 sacks. In the second half Winston completed only 5 of his next 10 passes, and
threw 2 interceptions. That second one inspired John Harbaugh to have McCarthy
take over for their next series. Meanwhile the Saints had gotten their act together
against the Giants defense, and they held a 34-10 lead. McCarthy didn't look like
he was going to save the day, when he threw an interception on the fifth play
of the series, but Harbaugh kept him in for the next one. As it turned out,
McCarthy almost did save the day, helped by the Giants defense coming up with
a fumble recovery, and continually getting the Saints off the field fast to give
him time. McCarthy led the offense to 2 touchdowns and a field goal, and then
down to the Saints 14 yard line, where a touchdown would tie the game. He was
on a fourth down with seconds left, and an incomplete pass to Likely, had the
Giants on the losing end of a 34-27 game. McCarthy finished up with 11 completions
on 21 passes with one touchdown and one interception. It may have hurt to
keep Skattebo out of the mix today with no carries, likely due to his fumble last
week. The running backs totaled just 34 yards on 14 carries, and Tracy had one
rushing touchdown. Malik Nabers stood out, considering there were 22 incompletions
thrown by the two quarterbacks, he caught 12 of 15 for 165 yards. Isaiah Likely
was 6 of 11 for 99 yards and 1 touchdown. The Giants have a new coaching staff,
and week in and week out they are still trying to figure out what they have to
work with. The Giants are still first in the division, and after losing today's
game let's see what they come up with for next week."
