Giants - Eagles
Game 8 preview
Sunday Nov 8, 1:00 PM - Giants at Eagles

Giants (4-2-1) Eagles (2-6)
The Eagles had an early first quarter lead in their game with the Washington Commanders last week, but never scored again for the rest of the game. They ended up with a 27-10 loss.
The Giants were coming off a 27-21 overtime win over the Houston Texans, heading into their bye week. They were in first place then, and after all the other teams in their division had played their games, the Giants are still in first place.

Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles have done well in recent years. Doug Pederson had them in the playoffs in three of the five years he was head coach, including a Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots. Nick Sirianni took over in 2021, and they have finished first and second in the NFC East division every year. In their two strongest years with 14-3 records, they went on to play in the Super Bowl.
The Eagles lost Super Bowl LVII to the Kansas City Chiefs after the 2022 season. 38-35. Two years later they took on the Chiefs again and won Super Bowl LIX with a 40-22 score. The Eagles are off to a poor start this year, and their 2-6 record has them
currently sitting in last place in the division.

Philadelphia Eagles Offense
The rushing attack and points scored were two big factors for the Eagles last Super Bowl success, but those numbers slipped last season. This year, as you would expect from the injuries they've sustained, things are even worse. Jalen Hurts led the team to their first two wins before losing the next three, all four points or less close matches, except for one. That hasn't been the case in the last three losses with Hurts being sidelined, and missing the rest of the season due to blood clot issues. The backup quarterback is Tanner McKee, a sixth-round pick by the Eagles in 2023. Before this season, McKee had two starts with a 1-1 record.
The last two losses were by 17 points in each game to the Cowboys and Commanders. McKee has thrown for two touchdowns and two interceptions and hasn't had much help from the rushing game. Saquon Barkley has been dealing with hamstring and back injuries. In McKee's first two starts, Barkley totaled 9 carries and had one rushing touchdown. Last week Barkley also ran for one touchdown, but his 13 carries averaged 2.3 yards for a total of 30 yards. Behind Barkley is Elijah Mitchell, who has played in just two games, averaging 3.2 yards a carry, and
Jaydon Blue, who played in his first game for the Eagles last week. Blue had no carries, and caught 1 pass for 9 yards.
The top two receivers for the Eagles are DeVonta Smith, who led the team last year, and Dontayvion Wicks. Both of them will be out for this game as they were last week. Rookie Makai Lemon, drafted by the Eagles with the 20th overall pick, has given them all they have been looking for. Staying healthy, Lemon has been seeing the most targets come his way. In the last two games he's caught 13 of 17 for 124 yards and 1 touchdown. Tight end Dallas Goedert has also missed games, but has been there for McKee in the last three with 15 receptions for 139 yards.

Philadelphia Eagles Defense
They were the top ranked passing defense in their Super Bowl year, and second in points allowed. Those numbers are hard to maintain, and understandably did drop, but not as much as their rushing defense. This year they are 28th in rushing yards allowed, giving up 100 or more rushing yards in every game they've played. They haven't been hit with injuries like their offense has seen, but without that support, they tend to fade in the second half of games. That's when they're giving up the most rushing yards and points.
They'll catch a break this week, as Cam Skattebo is listed as doubtful to play, but the Giants can put it together with a rested offensive line coming off the bye week, and with fullback Patrick Ricard leading the way for Devin Singletary.
J.J. McCarthy completed 71.4 percent of his passes in his first game as the Giants starting quarterback, making accurate throws to his receivers. In all, Malik Nabers has caught 11 of his 14 passes for 206 yards. That has to be on the minds of top cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, who each have 1 of the teams 3 total interceptions. Safety Andrew Mukuba has the other. This defense has come up with only 10 sacks in eight games. Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalen Carter each have 4. This defense has the talent, but haven't been able to put it all together on a consistent basis.

Giants Offense
J.J. McCarthy has shown what he can do with his arm. Last game he completed 20 of his 28 passes for 252 yards, and showed a real strong connection with Malik Nabers, who caught 7 of nine passes for 111 yards, including a 42 yard reception. Malachi Fields caught 4 of his 5 passes, and one was a 47 yard completion. McCarthy threw for a number of big plays, and was careful with the ball. Though he was sacked three times, there were no turnovers. There were no touchdowns thrown, and McCarthy left that up to the rushing attack. The way he was controlling the drives, the Texans couldn't just focus on stopping the run.
Cam Skattebo was the lead rusher last game. It was a heavy load, with 17 carries for 124 yards and 1 touchdown. There wasn't much choice, as Tyrone Tracy Jr. injured his hamstring near the end of the second quarter. Giving it his all in all four quarters, averaging over 5 yards on his 16 carries, Skattebo's 17th carry was a 42-yard run. Devin Singletary, who had no carries at all in the first half, followed up that big play with a 30-yard run to give the Giants an overtime win over the Houston Texans.
Singletary's very next play might be when the Giants first take to the field going up against the Philadelphia Eagles. It's not a reward for Singletary, and Skattebo hasn't been demoted. Even after having the extra time the bye week afforded him, Skattebo is still dealing with a hamstring issue, and is listed as doubtful. Tyrone Tracy Jr. was placed on injured reserve, so he's not available.

Giants Defense
Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson had to do some extra thinking this week. After planning to see quarterback Tanner McKee take the field to lead the Eagles on their offensive drives, Joe Milton III will be in charge. Milton has no experience being a starting quarterback, but has played in one game for the Patriots, and four for the Cowboys last year. In those games Milton has thrown for two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was signed off the Cowboys practice squad three weeks ago.
Milton has a strong arm, and is more mobile than McKee, who will be the backup, but is listed as questionable for this game. The Giants have blitzed a lot over the past four games, so that might have been on head coach Nick Siriann's mind for a quarterback switch, even before McKee was listed as questionable. The Eagles offensive line hasn't had an easy go of it protecting a pocket passer. They're used to Jalen Hurts being back there making bad things go good by using his legs.
Milton might help in their efforts, but he is an inexperienced quarterback making his first start, and throwing to receivers who aren't DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks. Abdul Carter has only two sacks so far, but he leads the team in quarterback pressures, and it's not easy to throw on this defense. Thanks in part to the efforts of cornerbacks Deonte Banks and Greg Newsome II, the Giants are in the top three, allowing just under 195 passing yards a game.
The best help Milton will get will come from a rushing attack that depends a lot on how up to the task Saquon Barkley will be, and who plays behind him. The Giants run defense has been their weak point, giving up over 128 yards per game. Shelby Harris and DJ Reader have been doing their best, but they need more from the rest of the group. Rookie Arvell Reese is still learning, and has been effective in the areas the defense has placed him. He could play a bigger role this week

Overall
The Eagles have lost the last six games they've played. It's been a long stretch since the season started, and they'll be looking forward to having their bye week after this game. The Giants will be well rested coming off their bye, but they still have to play in Philadelphia. The Giants haven't won as a visiting team at Lincoln Financial Field since 2013. In his career, John Harbaugh is 15-3 in games coming off a bye week, and has a winning record over all three of the Giants oppents in the division. We'll see how this one plays out.
