Giants
lose to the Bengals 17-7
"Watching
the earlier games today, I saw the Commanders lose a tough one, 30-23. The Eagles
just scraped by with a 20-16 win, and the Cowboys were trounced, 47-9. Those two
teams seem to be really struggling right now. I was anxious to see the Giants
continue to play as well as they did last time to improve their chances of moving
up in the NFC East. It was expected to be tough as they were up against the Cincinnati
Bengals, a team they were not expected to beat. The Giants fell behind fast
in the first quarter on Cincinnati's opening drive, when quarterback Joe Burrow
took off on a run. The defense had just sacked Burrow, and the Bengals had to
blow an early time out to get things in order, facing a 3rd-and-18. No one, including
the Giants defense at that point, expected to see Burrow, or anyone for that matter
run with the ball on the next play. The defense was caught flat footed, and that's
a good way to describe it, as Burrow was able to get past them and run 47 yards
for a touchdown. The Giants went nowhere on their turn, and after the defense
forced the Bengals to a three-and-out, Daniel Jones and his group were up again.
Things were looking good, and Jones got them down to a first-and-ten at the Cincinnati
14-yard line. That's when Jones blew it. Trying to avoid a sack he was hit while
tossing the ball away, and it turned into an interception. It also turned out
to be the Giants longest drive in the first half, and they were held scoreless.
Meanwhile the defense did their job and kept Cincinnati off the board as well. The
Giants were down 7-0 and got the ball first to start off the third quarter. They
gained only 8 yards, and I was shocked when head coach Brian Daboll decided they
should go for the 4th-and-2 from their own 38 yard line. That is something you
do late in the fourth quarter when you're down by seven trying to save the game.
Jones pass was knocked away and the Bengals had it and a great opportunity to
score points from that spot. Daboll suddenly became a genius though, because the
defense came through for him. Three plays later they caused running back Zack
Moss to fumble and they recovered the ball. The Giants then had their second
longest drive of the game. They had to overcome two fourth down plays, and marched
79 yards, with Tyrone Tracy taking it in one yard for a touchdown, and a 7-7 tie
score. Cincinnati got their act together, and had a touchdown nullified by a penalty.
After Burrow was sacked on the next play, they settled for a field goal to regain
the lead. The third quarter ended with Jones connecting with tight end Theo Johnson
for 15 yards. It was good to see the offense make plays as they did on their last
drive. They got to the Cincinnati 28-yard line, and fill-in kicker Greg Joseph
tried a 47 yard field goal which he missed. The next time the Giants had the
ball, Jones got them down to the Cincinnati 36-yard line. It would be a long field
goal to tie the game, but on fourth down Jones pass to Darius Slayton was incomplete.
The Giants defense had an opportunity at about the two minute mark left when running
back Chase Brown fumbled, but it was knocked out of bounds before they could recover
it. Brown made up for that on the very next play, breaking out for a 30 yard touchdown
run. The Giants needed two scores, so with a minute left had Joseph try a 45 yard
field goal, and he missed that one as well. The
Giants looked good with their win over the Seahawks last week, but they couldn't
keep it going tonight."
"The
Giants offense was looking better the past few weeks, and despite missing key
players, they were able to pull off a win in their last game against the Seattle
Seahawks. They've had the benefit of offensive line stability, with the same five
starters playing in every game. Tonight Daniel Jones was still without his favorite
target Malik Nabers, and was also missing lead running back Devin Singletary.
The offense still scored 23 points, and could have had 7 more if Eric Gray didn't
fumble the ball over to the Seahawks early on. Their success was based on
rookie running back Tyrone Tracy showing he was up to the task with 18 carries
for 129 yards for an impressive 7.2 yards a carry. The running game totaled up
at 175 yards, their best showing so far this season. Darius Slayton was there
for Jones with 8 catches on 11 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown. Their
next opponent was the Cincinnati Bengals, a team with a struggling defense ranked
near the bottom in yards and points allowed. The Bengals were coming off a loss
to the Baltimore Ravens where they gave up 41 points. Bottom line though, the
Bengals straightened out their defense in time for the Giants. Tracy couldn't
run through them and his 17 carries totaled just 50 yards, a 2.9 yards a carry
average. Jones deep passes weren't working tonight, and this time Slayton caught
only 6 of 11 for 57 yards. Last week the Giants held the Seahawks to their
lowest points scored on the year, and they did a nice job on the Bengals as well.
Cincinnati's 17 points was about half of what they've averaged over their last
four games. If the defense had recovered a fumble right near the end of the game,
the Bengals would have had seven less, and the Giants a chance to tie or win the
game. The defense came up with four sacks on Joe Burrow to add to the 22 NFL high
that they already had. They did their part, and as has been the case for most
of these games, their offense let them down. Next week the Eagles come to town.
Hopefully the Giants will be at full strength with all their players by then."
