Giants
lose to Tampa Bay 30-7
"It's
been a disappointing season for the Giants, especially for the home fans. Daniel
Jones is off the team now, and that was hard to take as the season still has seven
games left. Jones is a spectator now, and I don't know who he'll be rooting for
the way things went down. Tampa Bay is a tough team, and I was hoping the Giants
could squeeze out a win against them as they've lost a few coming into this game.
Tampa Bay got the ball first, and Tommy DeVito was sitting on the sidelines
as they game started waiting for his shot. He was watching along with the rest
of us for a long eight and a half minutes. DeVito finally got up to take the field
with the Giants trailing 7-0. He got to sit again pretty soon after. Things started
with a promising 16-yard run by Tyrone Tracy, but DeVito was sacked three plays
later. On his next drive DeVito was sacked on the first play, and the Giants
went three-and-out. DeVito completed a nice 23-yard pass to Theo Johnson during
his next drive, but was sacked again two plays later. Before you knew it the half
was over, and the Giants had no points. Meanwhile Tampa Bay was busy scoring on
all their drives but one, and had a 23-0 lead. You almost didn't want to see
any more, but the third quarter started with things looking much better. DeVito
was hitting Malik Nabers with first down passes, and Wan'Dale Robinson got in
the mix. Tyrone Tracy was running the ball, and the Giants soon had a first-and-goal
at the Tampa Bay 5-yard line. That's when Tracy fumbled the ball over. If you
thought you'd seen the worst today, you next watched Tampa Bay take the ball 95
yards into the endzone for a touchdown, and 30-0 lead. That drive took over
7 minutes, and not to be outdone, the Giants put together a long drive into the
fourth quarter, and put points up on the board for the first time in this game.
It was mostly DeVito throwing passes, and he had a nice 17-yard scramble to the
Tampa Bay-1 yard line. Tracy wasn't on the field during all this, and Devin Singletary
ran the ball in for a touchdown, and 30-7 score. Tampa Bay muffed the kickoff
return, and they had to start near their goal line. That didn't seem to matter
much as two plays later, their running back ran the ball to the Giants side of
the field, with a 56-yard run. Quarterback Baker Mayfield fumbled the ball soon
after, and it was great to see. The turnover wasn't wasn't going to matter much
the way this game was going, but earlier Mayfield had mimicked DeVito's hand gestures
when he scored a touchdown. So small satisfaction for that. Neither team scored
on the following drives, and that was it. The Giants have a short week to regroup
as they'll be headed out to play the Cowboys on Thanksgiving day. That might not
be something to look forward to for an enjoyable day. I don't know where things
will go for the rest of the Giants season, but I'm guessing not very far."
"The
Giants figured they'd be better off without players like Saquon Barkley and Daniel
Jones, and now here they are taking one of their worst losses of the season. There
were others where they had scored seven or less points, but the defense looked
terrible giving up 30, and the overall stats were nothing like you would ever
like to see. In the first half, Tampa Bay had 17 first downs leading to three
touchdowns and a field goal. They scored on all the drives they had but one.
The Giants offense came up with 3 first downs for a total 45 yards, as 21 yards
were lost with Tommy DeVito taking three sacks. Tampa Bay was averaging 7.4 yards
a play, and the Giants 2.5. The time of possession was just as lopsided, with
Tampa Bay controlling the ball for 20 minutes to the Giants 10. The score was
23-0, and nothing the Giants were doing on either side of the ball inspired you
to think that a comeback was in order. Brian Daboll's play calling was suspect
in the first quarter. The Giants were on the field for only the second time, and
already had to make a switch on the offensive line. Jermaine Eluemunor, filling
in for Andrew Thomas, was out early, and Chris Hubbard was in there at left tackle.
At this point in the first quarter the Giants were down by just 7 points. They
had a 4th-and-1 at their own 37 yard line, and Daboll had wide receiver Wan'Dale
Robinson run for it. He was stopped, and with the benefit of good field position,
six plays later Tampa Bay kicked a short field goal and the score was upped to
10-0. The Giants looked to be getting their act together at the start of the
second half. They worked their way down the field, and had a 1st-and-10 at the
Tampa Bay 5-yard line. Daboll got clever again, and instead of Devito handing
the ball off to Tyrone Tracy, the rookie running back took a direct snap, and
fumbled the ball over. Tampa Bay scored a touchdown on their next series, and
the Giants got their first touchdown of the game right after that. It cost them
a lot of clock time from the third into the fourth quarter. That was the Giants
last score, and they ended up with a 30-7 loss. DeVito looked better in the
second half of this game, getting passes off to Malik Nabers who caught 6 of them
for 64 yards. DeVito finished up completing 21 of his 31 passes for 189 yards.
He was sacked four times, but didn't turn the ball over passing or running. DeVito
was the second leading rusher, with 7 carries for 32 yards. Tracy carried the
ball 9 times for 42 yards, and had that one costly fumble The defense came up
with no sacks, and allowed Baker Mayfield to average over 12 yards a pass on his
24 completions, for 294 yards. They gave up 4 rushing touchdowns, and 157 rushing
yards. The team experienced a tough week seeing how things went down with Jones,
who was released from the team. They didn't know what to think with third stringer
DeVito getting the call to step into his quarterback role over Drew Lock, who
was the backup. Their problems on the offensive line have continued, and they
can't score points. The defense has been in a downturn, missing tackles, and giving
up big plays. There were no improvements in this game at all, and if nothing changes
over the next six games, the losses will just keep on coming."
